Following serious accidents on unlit roads in rural areas, several parties called for the introduction of contour markings.
In the EU, 3M , amongst others, lobbied very hard for contour markings on semi-trailers. However, this caused problems for curtain side trailers and, if retrofitting were stipulated, this would entail huge additional costs and lead to problems. Together with VACO and tyre manufacturers, TRTA investigated whether side markings such as on bicycles would also be an option for truck and trailer tyres.
Various studies and tests have been carried out, but still without an effective and practicable solution owing to the fact that a trailer tyre has to be able to cope with much greater loads than a bicycle tyre. Problems were also expected to occur with respect to recycling.
